Schools Choir Competition
The Mitchell’s Plain Schools Choir Competition, founded by Trevino Isaacs and the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy (MPMA), marked a historic milestone for the community with its inaugural event on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Bringing together eleven schools from across the area, and students hailing from communities outside of Mitchell's Plain, such as Khayelitsha and Phillipi, etc, the competition celebrated the highly impacting and transformative power of music in uniting communities, young voices and fostering creativity, social cohesion, and pride.
The event showcased exceptional talent, with choirs from primary and high schools captivating the audience with their performances. Oval North High School took home the top honour in the high school category, while Yellowwood Primary School triumphed in the primary school division. The competition was a vibrant display of community spirit, underscoring the pivotal role that music plays in empowering youth from diverse backgrounds.
The competition is more than just a showcase—it is a catalyst for change. By providing a platform for artistic expression, MPMA aims to inspire schools to embrace arts initiatives and cultivate an enduring culture of music education. The event also included cash prizes for winning schools, ensuring that resources are reinvested into strengthening music and arts programs in local schools.
This initiative aligns with MPMA's broader mission of addressing socio-economic challenges through music education. It is part of the academy’s vision to build a creative, empowered generation by providing opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
The Mitchell's Plain Schools Choir Competition is not just an annual event—it is a transformative experience that uplifts the community and creates pathways for the youth to discover and harness their potential.
As MPMA founder and managing director Trevino Isaacs shared, the competition is a "vibrant showcase of young talent and community spirit," reflecting the academy's unwavering commitment to creating opportunities that inspire, uplift, and transform.
Looking Ahead
With the launch of this competition, MPMA has laid a strong foundation for fostering artistic growth in schools across Mitchell’s Plain. In 2025 the academy aims to include at least 30 schools in the area. By creating this unique platform, the academy continues to reaffirm its role as a beacon of hope and creativity in the community.
