Born in a Pastoral home Jpgrooves Stevens found himself in church even before he could speak. And as many other musicians, that was where it started for him as well. Born in Cape Town South Africa. Jp started playing at the early age of 7. And hasn’t stop since.
He pursued his studies in music, and in 2009 graduated with distinction in music performance at the Cape Music Institute (CMI) and London College of Music. After graduating, his professional career started working an recording with various artist he was then recommended by CMI Principle (Camillo Lombard) to teach at ‘’Restoring The Sound’’a music school for under privilege kids founded by (Trevor Sampson)were he gain lots of experience and fell in love with working with kids and seeing them grow musically .Currently He is Teaching at Cape Drummers Lab founded by (Mornay Hoffmeester) and Music Academy founded by(Trevino Isaacs).Teaching over 40 student a month ,between the two Schools. Quoting from one of his interviews “Seeing kids learn and develop when I teach them gives me great Joy and Ambition”.
Jp is one of Cape Town’s most versatile Drummers. Having studied and played different genre in different ensembles. He has played with AllouApril, Ernie Smith, and Nia Nell the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. He is currently Managing and playing in a Zulu Band playing traditional African music. And would one day love to teach the world the sound of Africa.
